Recycle or Trash it?

Recycle or Trash it?

Should I recycle or throw it in the trash? It’s a common question we all may find ourselves asking, especially when it comes to items like batteries, appliances and electronics. We’ve provided some guidance to help you sort it all out. You can drop any of these off at LB Medwaste and we’ll gladly help dispose of them properly.

Batteries: While manufacturers produce and sell mercury-free alkaline batteries, most common batteries still contain lead, cadmium and nickel, all of which can harm the environment. Recycling at home is a possibility, but do not trash.

Rechargeable batteries: Batteries that are rechargeable, such as those in our smartphones, can contain toxic heavy metals such as lead-acid, nickel-cadmium and nickel-hydrogen that may harm the environment. Do not trash.

Lightbulbs: Many compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), fluorescent bulbs and other bulbs contain mercury. Because mercury is released into the atmosphere through incineration, it often contaminates bodies of water and wildlife. Do not trash.

Paint: There are two types of household paint: oil-based and latex. Oil-based paint is considered a hazardous waste product due to the number of toxic chemicals and minerals it contains. Latex paint can be recycled into new paint as it is not hazardous. Our facilities can take care of handling and disposing of both.

Cellphones: The inside parts of cellphones are valuable. Look for in-store and mail-in recycling options or bring them to us and we’ll recycle for you.

Computers: Computers and monitors can contain mercury, lead, arsenic and other dangerous metals that can hurt the environment. Like cellphones, some stores will take them; LB Medwaste can also handle.

Household Appliances: Items like refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning units, washers and dryers contain metals, as well as dangerous materials such as Freon and ozone-depleting chemicals. Call LB Medwaste and arrange for a pick-up.
