Best Practices for Waste Disposal

Whatever your healthcare practice, you are likely to be disposing of medical waste. As you know, it’s important to dispose of this waste properly so it doesn’t negatively affect the environment. It’s always helpful to get a refresher of the best safety practices. Keep these guidelines handy and in a visible place to serve as a reminder.

  1. Determine what type of waste your facility is producing. Is it infectious (blood, body fluids, etc.) or non-infectious? Non-infectious waste can be thrown out with the other trash. Do you have pathological (carcasses, tissues, body parts) or pharmaceutical waste (unused medications, contaminated packaging)?
  2. Separate your waste. Sharp items should be placed in special containers that will inhibit needle sticks. Chemotherapy and pathological waste require special permitting.
  3. Know the Laws: EPA, DOT, DEA, OSHA. These agencies make sure you adhere to strict guidelines to keep the pick-up, transportation, storage and disposal of waste as safe as possible.
  4. Choose a qualified provider. Selecting the right provider will make your facility’s entire medical waste disposal process smooth and easy. LB Medwaste ensures your medical waste disposal is as simple and hassle-free as possible.
